Dr. Sturdivant is an interdisciplinary scholar with a primary research interest in benthic ecology (i.e., the seafloor), anthropogenic disturbance of the marine environment (i.e., how humans affect the ocean), environmental monitoring, and technology development of tools to apply to ocean research. The scale of his work and his ecosystem level approach to ecology are the distinguishing features of his research. Dr. Sturdivant studies the function, diversity, and disturbance of aquatic systems, with a special emphasis on the dynamics of marine systems following human impacts (e.g., hypoxia, eutrophication, oil spills) and application of novel ocean observing systems to address issues of marine ecology. Dr. Sturdivant has experience working in shallow coastal systems and the deep sea.
